How to book business class with Air Canada Aeroplan points

Plain-language steps. Sourced and dated.

Aeroplan is the loyalty program of Air Canada. It accepts Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt points, and it can book Air Canada plus many Star Alliance airlines, so it covers a lot of the world from one balance.

Disclosure: Jetset Miles may earn a commission if you apply for a credit card through a link on this site, at no cost to you. No affiliate links are live yet. Commissions never decide which programs we cover or how we describe them. We are not a bank, airline or financial advisor. See our full disclosure.

Who it is for

Aeroplan works well when you want a published price for a partner flight, or when your trip needs a Star Alliance carrier. Star Alliance includes airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss, ANA, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines, though membership and routes change, so confirm on the Aeroplan site.

Air Canada's own page confirms that US Amex Membership Rewards points transfer at 1,000 points to 1,000 Aeroplan points, in 1,000 point increments, and that transferred points cannot be moved back. Citi ThankYou is not on our list of Aeroplan transfer partners.

Step by step

  1. Create an Aeroplan account. Use the name on your card account.
  2. Search on aircanada.com. Use the Aeroplan award search to see Air Canada and partner results, with the points price and the taxes and fees shown.
  3. Compare partners. Search the same route on more than one carrier if the tool lets you. Partner prices often follow a published chart that depends on distance and cabin, so look at that chart on the Aeroplan site.
  4. Transfer the amount you need. Do not transfer extra. Transfers are final.
  5. Wait for the points to post, then book. Keep your confirmation and check the change fees shown at booking.

Tips and pitfalls

What we have not verified

We do not publish Aeroplan partner award prices or chart values on this page. Read the current chart on the Aeroplan site and treat any older figures you see elsewhere as out of date until you check.

A sample planning routine

List the airlines that fly your route in business class, then check which are Air Canada or Star Alliance members. Search Aeroplan for each, and record the points price and cash charges. If an airline's own site shows space that Aeroplan does not, note the date and flight, and try again later, because partner space can be released at different times. When you find a good option, check how many Aeroplan points you hold, subtract that from the price, and transfer only the difference from the points program that makes the most sense. Many travelers keep a small cushion for fees and last-minute price changes, but you should decide that yourself.

Common questions

Why do so many people start with Aeroplan? Four of our five points programs transfer to it, and it reaches many carriers. That convenience is the reason, not a promise of low prices.

Can I book a mix of airlines on one award? Rules for multi-airline awards are on the Aeroplan site. Read them before you plan.

What if the points do not arrive? Contact the issuer first, then Aeroplan, with your transfer confirmation.
